WhatsApp Messenger is considered the most widely used messenger in the world, with over a billion users globally. Despite being perceived as one of the safest means of online communication, WhatsApp Messenger is not immune to cyber-attacks. Cybersecurity expert Muhammad Asad Ul Rehman expressed these concerns while discussing cyber-attacks related to WhatsApp Messenger with the media. He mentioned that while WhatsApp was considered secure in the past, nowadays it is also prone to daily cyber-attacks.
One type of cyber-attack involves sending a compromised image or file, allowing hackers to inject viruses into any mobile device and gain access to its activities, including data. Additionally, various methods of WhatsApp hacking have been introduced, enabling both ordinary citizens and government officials to seize control of WhatsApp accounts and access their data. Rehman stated that clandestine agencies of hostile nations have acquired such capabilities, allowing them to access mobile phones, affecting users in more than 20 countries, including Pakistani users, with the assistance of an Israeli company’s spyware.
Therefore, senior government officials, especially those in sensitive positions, are advised not to send official documents via messaging apps like WhatsApp and to use their WhatsApp with the latest updates. WhatsApp users were urged not to click on any suspicious links, refrain from downloading files from unknown sources, and enable two-step verification to reduce the risk of account hacking.
